![]() ![]() It’s up to you to figure out how to apply yourself to find what is fulfilling, don’t be afraid, you’ll be just fine.In my dreams, Google begs me to come back. You have to be to get where you are today. Point is, you have a great skill set and obviously are a high achiever. She’s probably the happiest person person I know. I know a lady who left a large social media company to start a charity in LA that helps homeless people get back on their feet. ![]() I know a guy who left oracle to become a ballroom dancer and he now runs a studio in the Bay Area and was on a few seasons of dancing with the stars. He has since founded and sold a company, became the VP of marketing at one of the biggest media companies in the world, and now is a marketing exec at a well funded startup. I know a guy who left a dev job at Microsoft to become a personal assistant in Hollywood. I’ve also seen people leave entirely and start over. In this situation, you still make a lot of money, but maybe you can find a niche that helps satisfy whatever is missing. I’ve seen quite a few people leave big tech for smaller companies or non-tech companies but they are still doing tech. Some people have great experiences, but some don’t. They take some of the brightest, most talented people in the world and have them work on meaningless things. What would you focus on if you didn’t have that job?īig tech companies pay a lot but they suck the life out of you. I simply do not care about this job at all. there can be aspects of what you like about your current job that you can focus on to figure out your next move… and it doesn’t have to be at the expense of your income or lifestyle. The point is, is doesn’t have to be love my job or I’m quitting. Not knowing specifically what you do or like I’m going to make things up as an example - If you’re an SDE right now and hate it, you might realize that rising to a principal engineer actually allows you do more of what you like (design reviews, product strategy, mentoring juniors), or maybe you realize that hey you have a knack for figuring out customer experience and product behaviour and should go into product management instead. And sometimes through the analysis you may discover aspects of your current job that actually tickles your mind more than you thought, and you can double down on it more. The key is to analyze what skills/experience you’re getting out of your current job and see if you can position it into something that is closer to what would make it more fulfilling and move towards that. I’ve never stayed in the same job/role for more than 3 years but have managed to always find something else that paid better. I just simply do not enjoy what I do and I’m looking for advice on if people have quit a high paying job for something they cared more about. My family is ecstatic that I have this job and everyone tells me how set I am going to be for the rest of my life seeing as I started well so early. I don’t have any friends that are in a similar position financially so I’m not sure who to talk to about it without coming across as ungrateful or an idiot. I daydream and think of other ways to live life while stuck at work looking out my window. Nothing about what I do is appealing to me besides the salary. Not one bone in my body wants to continue what I’m doing. I simply to do not care about the job at all. Work life balance is great and I work from home. For all intents and purposes, I live a cushy lifestyle that I enjoy. I’ve paid off my student loans, paid off my truck, stashed up a good amount in my savings and 401k etc. At 23 I made north of $180k and this year at 24 I’m set to make well over $200k. I don’t want this to come across as ungrateful, but I’m in a pickle and I can’t seem to make a decision.Īt 22 years old I graduated undergrad with arguably the best job one can ask for in big tech.
